From hashtagging everything, creating crazy YouTube videos, and possibly the most famous meme of all, Grumpy Cat, you never know what’s going to catch on. But over the last several years, nothing has been more popular than the selfie. Everyone and their Grandma (literally, Google Grandma selfie and you’ll get tons of results) are taking and posting selfies on a regular basis. So you have to wonder, can these help your business?

One of the number one goals of using social media for your business is to build a one-on-one relationship with your client base. Putting a human face on a company is a new approach that seems to be paying off greatly. With the easy access that customers have to your business through your Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. accounts, they feel as if they can easily reach out and speak to someone, rather than dialing up a 1-800 number and speaking to a customer service representative who may or may not be able to help them. This has led to a loyalty and familiarity between customer and business that is unlike anything before.

Since this is the case, and there is nothing more personal than a selfie, then why not try and use this trend to your advantage? You may think it is a bit silly, but clients love to get a behind-the-scenes look into what goes on within your business. Taking selfies can give them a glimpse into the ins and outs of what makes your company what it is.

If you want to jump on this bandwagon, there are a few ways you could go about it. You could start a selfie series of sorts, and have everyone within the core group of your company post one with a brief bio. You could turn this into a weekly thing that customers know they can expect. This unique approach might just set your business apart from the competition.

You could also have someone from your social media team go out into the trenches and find customers to take selfies with. If you own a company chain, for instance, your social media team could go out from location to location and snap a selfie with someone in the store. This is a great way to bring your customers into the mix and make it fun for everyone involved. People love to feel “famous”, and by posting their photo and tagging them in it you might make their day…and turn them into an incredibly loyal customer at the same time.

Another approach would be to take selfies showcasing new products. Choose someone, or a few people, to go out and take a photo while wearing, holding, or showcasing the product or service that your business specializes in. This is a great way to capitalize on the trend while also promoting new products and services.

When dealing with social media trends for your business, the more creative you can be, the better. Since this is all new territory, there are no rules. The great thing about that is there’s nothing to hold you back! Make it fun and try things that might sound a little crazy. Social media gives you a freedom that traditional marketing methods never could.
